Johnny Manuelito was born in Crownpoint, New Mexico in 1942. He is the son of Annie Wero and Johnny R Manuelito Sr., a WW2 code talker. The main display for the WW2 Code Talker exhibit at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot contains the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to Johnny R. Manuelito Sr. for his services.

In his younger years Manuelito served in the army as military police. He then served as a Navajo Nation police officer and became an EMT in Crownpoint. He also was a cook at the To’Hajiilee Community School when he wasn’t making jewelry.
